Dental Membranes for Periodontics & Surgery

These membranes function by forming a barrier over an area where tissue regeneration is required. They are used in procedures such as guided bone regeneration (GBR) to prevent surrounding tissue from invading the bone defect.

This is generally the best option for cases where the procedure needs to be minimally invasive, such as instances where the patient has a bleeding disorder. It is also used for minor bone defects.

Bovine membranes are also typically non-allergenic, which is important because this ensures that they will not cause an adverse reaction in the patient when used.

No, they don’t. Most dental membranes are designed to prevent the formation of biofilms while promoting the growth of desired tissues such as epithelium and bone. They contain special antimicrobial qualities that may make them undesirable substrates for bacterial colonization. 

However, while this is true, some bacterial colonies may still form on the membrane, which is why it’s important for patients to maintain proper dental hygiene. It’s also a good idea to go with resorbable membranes whenever possible to prevent bacterial infections.
