Myths & Facts About Dental Implants
The dream about beaming smiles and impressive white teeth with perfect shape used to be associated only with Hollywood stars.
But today it can come true for any of us and strengthen teeth and radiant smiles are not just good for our appearance but they’re good for our health as well.
Unluckily nearly everybody loses one, several, or even all teeth during their lifetime.
Losing teeth leads to masticatory dysfunction and in its turn, it causes different diseases of the stomach and intestine, displacement of adjacent teeth, change of facial proportions, and even speech disturbance – all of this ruins our organisms.
The only way out is the restoration of the teeth with the most modern and safe method – dental implantation.
However, lots of people are really afraid of this perfect method which can return us a healthy and radiant smile.
So let’s bust the most popular myths about dental implantation.
Myth 1 – Racking aches
The bone which accepts the implant doesn’t have any nerve receptors and thus just can’t ache.
Frankly speaking putting the implant is no way more painful than caries treatment.
Modern anesthetics provide us with proper pain killers and more than that if there’re no individual contraindications the procedure can be carried out with general anesthesia.
Myth 2 – Danger of injury
Some people believe that procedure of implantation is very traumatic and causes long recovery time.
The installation of one implant takes from 20 to 40 minutes – it takes less time than profound treatment of pulpitis of three-canal tooth.
Two days after operation small edema can cause some discomfort but still a day after the operation the patient can return to his or her usual life. Bearing some tiny discomfort makes sense because implants don’t have any keeping time – they’re installed for the whole life.
Two-stage method of implantation is usually used. The intraosseous element is the first to be installed.
Then (3-6 months later) the gum conditioner is installed. Then it’s time for installation of orthopedic component which is provided by the construction of the implant.
So then a bone is formed around the implant. When the formation is finished the crown replacing the upper part of the tooth is installed. Moreover the most high-end methods of dental implantation allow the doctors installing temporary crown on fresh implant.
Myth 3 – The implants usually can’t get fully accustomed and are often rejected
According to official statistics about 96-98 percent of all implants are well accustomed.
The implant material – titanium – is biologically compatible.
Our immune system never determines it as alien substance thus titanium quickly and painlessly integrates in osseous tissue.
After 10 years of using only 5 percent of crowns need to be changed – usually their longevity is about 25 years!
Forty percent of dental bridges usually get outworn after 5-6 years of using.
So they need to be changed and this procedure demands grinding more and more teeth.
The successful outcome of implantation is guaranteed if the doctor smoothly follows prescribed procedure and uses only licensed materials. The implantation can be carried out only if the patient is in proper state of health and the patient meets all the doctor’s recommendations for the care of the implant.
Myth 4 – It’s extremely expensive
Well implantation is not the cheapest thing you could do with your teeth but even simple cast shows little difference between implant installation and restoration of dental bridge.
Replacing of defect of one tooth demands grinding of two adjacent bearing teeth and making two crowns for them.
Don’t forget to add endodontic treatment of bearing teeth and the statistics telling us that after 5-6 years of using 40 percent of dental bridges are outworn!
The implants serve their purpose for whole human life and the best denture needs to be changed at least once in ten years.
So considering long time period you’ll spend much more money and time on dental bridges than on procedure of implantation which needs to be done only once in your life!
Myth 5 – The implants have no difference with usual dentures
Implants have lots of advantages ordinary dentures don’t.
Firstly they let you save your teeth because the implants replace only one tooth and doesn’t influence adjacent ones.
Also implants prevent loss of valuable osseous tissue at the place of replaced tooth because when bone loses its functional load it starts to get atrophied.
The implants allow significant improvement of fixation of detachable dentures and save most of gustatory sensations.
A crown or a bridge built on the implant feels like real teeth.
Myth 6 – Too many contraindications
It’s obvious that the procedure of implantation has its indications and contraindications like treatment method.
However there’re nearly no absolute contraindications. Most of contraindications are just relative and can be removed after proper treatment.
Generally there’re no any certain reasons to refuse from such an effective method of restoration of esthetic look and proper functions of dentoalveolar system.
Myth 7-Dental Implants look fake
When done correctly, nobody should know that you have had dental implants.
The actual implant is buried underneath the gum, so should not be visible, and the false tooth is joined onto it.
The false tooth is made from a fully ceramic material and should be indistinguishable from a normal tooth.
